What is Biochar?
While biochar has been used for centuries in many parts of the world, only recently has biochar’s potential as a highly sustainable way of improving soil conditions been realised. Typically made by pyrolysis, a process of heating biomass in the absence of oxygen, biochar can increase nutrient retention and water filtration in soil, making it an ideal addition to agricultural and horticultural processes.
Biochar is fixed carbon meaning it will not turn back into CO2, whilst using surplus coppice wood stops the wood from decaying and releasing methane and CO2.
Woodland Biochar

Coppice waste wood is collected from the woodland biochar site.
2.
Kilns are fired up, ready for the smoke-free burn of the waste wood.
3.
Wood is added to the custom-made kilns, which burn up to 700 °C.
4.
Kilns are left running for around 13 hours per burn, whilst we add more wood.
5.
When finished, the kilns are shut down with water and the biochar is collected.
6.
Our pure biochar is then packaged in our eco-friendly sacks, ready for sale.

Can I buy pure Biochar online in the UK?Yes - you can buy pure biochar online in the UK from Woodland Biochar, as well as from a few other producers. Be careful when shopping for pure biochar online, as other UK companies may label their products as 'biochar' when it is in fact a mixture of biochar with other organic materials. Always look out for the '100% pure biochar' descriptions on products.

Can Biochar be used in my garden?Adding biochar to your garden soil will keep your plants happy! All of the nutrients and carbon that are captured through the lifecycle of biochar are slowly absorbed by the plants and vegetation that sits on top of it. We're currently working towards certification with the UK soil association, who will verify the quality and sustainability of our biochar for sale.

Is it safe to make Biochar at home?It's not safe to make biochar at home without specialist equipment and knowledge. It may seem simple enough to burn tree cuttings in your back garden, but the material produced will certainly not be of the same level of quality as our 100% pure UK biochar. The biochar production process (pyrolysis) requires expertise in managing temperatures and carefully managing the duration of the clean burn.
